Hi Home Makers,
Sorry about the delay in getting this out to you this month. It is the start of the silly season when my normally hectic life steps up a notch or two in activity level and if things weren’t already busy enough my daughter fell off a cliff 2 weeks ago breaking her arm very badly. It is an awful feeling watching your child fall and hurt themselves and not being able to do a thing to help. She was lucky though she could have been much worse. Hopefully she will take more care should she decide to go rock climbing again. The thing about accidents is you never know when they are going to happen and suddenly your life is changed forever…

A lady was very concerned about her missing parrot. Not knowing what to do, she called 111. "You got to help me find my parrot!" The operator patiently replied, "We can't help you with that, ma'am. This number only deals with emergencies." The lady persisted, and then the operator told her not to be concerned, that the parrot should fly back in a few days. "But you don't understand! The only thing he says is 'Here, kitty, kitty'!!!"
There was once a young man who, in his youth, professed his desire to become a great writer. When asked to define great, he said, "I want to write stuff that the whole world will read, stuff that people will react to on a truly emotional level, stuff that will make them scream, cry, howl in pain and anger!" He now works for Microsoft writing error messages.
"Hey, Mum," asked Freddie "can you give me twenty dollars?" "Certainly not." "If you do," he went on, "I'll tell you what dad said to the maid when you were at the beauty shop." His mother's ears perked up and, grabbing her purse, she handed over the money. "Well? What did he say?" He said, “make sure you wash my socks tomorrow”
What is the probability that something will happen according to the odds?
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.
I am becoming increasingly worried that there isn't enough anxiety in my life.

Back in the days when I studied Microbiology at University I was taught that our bodies are a complex ecosystem in which dwells numerous types of bacteria and that while some can potentially be harmful to us others are vital to our survival and above all we need to maintain the correct balance of living organisms within us. So I am quite annoyed at the sudden proliferation of antibacterial products on the market which encourage peoples paranoia of all bacteria in the false belief that by paying money to kill them all off they will be helping save their families from harm when in fact they will be paying money to increase health problems for their families. The problem with regularly killing all bacteria on you is that you kill off all the good bacteria as well as the bad bacteria opening the way for an unbalanced take over of the wrong type which could cause health problems later on. I am not totally opposed to the use of antibacterial soaps etc. they do have their place, but it is in moderation and should not be an everyday part of modern life!

We all know that many people favour their children depending on their sex – usually it is boys that are preferred but did you know that some sheep can exhibit this same sort of favouritism? A mother sheep recently gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl. From the moment of birth she wanted nothing to do with the daughter while she doted on the boy. She was so bad that it was decided to lock her in the barn with her offspring so she would have no alternative but to bond with both. Most sheep will feed their offspring if confined and develop a bond with them but not this mother. After 2 days she was still steadfastly refusing to feed the girl anything while being very over protective of the boy. It was decided the only way the girl would survive was if she was “adopted by somebody who wanted to ensure her survival. I am pleased to say she now loves her new 2 legged mum!

I was intrigued to hear New Zealand’s Green Party has been given $11.5 million of tax payers money to promote NZ made products. Apparently they intend to have a road show promoting buy NZ made and take it around the country. The thing that bothers me about that, is I know full well from all the people I meet at all the events I go to that most New Zealanders would prefer to buy NZ made - IF it was for the same price as the imported products – unfortunately the economic reality is we can not compete on price of many goods, except for primary products. So the Government will spent $11.5 million preaching to the converted! The cynic in me wonders if the money is actually being used as a feel good political campaign. I would much rather see that money be put to good practical use for instance helping NZ manufacturers market their products, reducing the amount of paper work and red tape small businesses are required to do, and allowing NZ manufacturers to use the trademarked made in NZ logo on their products at no cost!

Greetings Diana, Still soup weather. Just reading your Sept letter, and can't help but comment on the basketball hoops being left up for kids in the weekend. As a school neighbor I am always concerned about what goes on at the school over the fence. We have had to replace the shades at great expense twice because the public deem it necessary to damage them. Trampling, cutting and burning. BUT the hoops are another matter, schools have security lighting too and youth find it necessary to play at night -late! So we asked for them to be removed. They should be home in bed, don't you agree.
Cheers Raewyn
Hi Raewyn, Thanks for your letter which illustrates some of the problems with allowing children use of school facilities after hours. I totally understand and agree with your point of view but it does annoy me that once again it seams to be bad behaviour from the irresponsible kids spoiling things for the good children. I do get feed up at the way many people are “punished” because of the bad behaviour of a few. It seems we as a society do little to discourage bad behaviour from children. I was talking to a policeman the other day about what happens when a shop owner catches a child stealing, they told me that youth aid would get involved but essentially the child would not be punished or made to make good for the property they stole. Now what sort of incentive is that to get children to reform? The outside stall holders at Gisborne A&P show had a terrible time with children stealing this year. 10 stall holders had over $15,000 worth of goods stolen between then over the 2 day show.

Having had my daughter break her right arm prior to NCEA exams I was disgusted and amazed to find that although she should be able to get a writer in to write her answers (right arm will still be in a caste) she is not eligible for a writer because she did not apply in time. All applications have to be in by July. I suppose if she was psychic she could have told them about the impending accident but then I suppose if she was psychic she would have avoided the accident altogether. The only way I can see around this stupid piece of bureaucracy is to make yearly applications for all your children sitting NCEA for a writer in case they should accidentally hurt themselves and require assistance. Yes, that really makes sense doesn’t it???
Until next month take care of yourselves, count your blessings, enjoy life.
Kindest regards,
Diana.
