A Parting Word

Hi HomeMakers,
I hope you have been making the most of the holidays. I have just got back from a trip to Hong Kong and China - what a culture shock that was. Too many people for a country girl like me I’m afraid but I daresay if you grew up in a large city you would find country life very unsettling. I must say the nightly light shows in Hong Kong were amazing! Hundreds of buildings covered in lights that made different patterns they were a very spectacular sight.

THE MONTHLY GIGGLE

A school teacher injured his back and had to wear a plaster cast around the upper part of his body. It fit under his shirt and was not noticeable at all. On the first day of the term, still with the cast under his shirt, he found himself assigned to the toughest students in school. Walking confidently into the rowdy classroom, he opened the window as wide as possible and then busied himself with desk work. When a strong breeze made his tie flap, he took the desk stapler and stapled the tie to his chest. He had no trouble with discipline that term...

One day during cooking class, the teacher, Mrs. Jones, was extolling her secrets for preparing perfect sauces. When she ordered us to the stoves to prepare our assignments, she said, "Don't forget to use wooden spoons." As I stirred my sauce, I contemplated the physics behind the mystery of the wooden spoon and decided it must have something to do with heat conduction. I approached Mrs. Jones to test my theory. "Why wooden spoons?", I asked. "Because," she replied, "if I have to sit here listening to all your metal spoons banging against metal pots, I'd go nuts.

• Cooperation can only be reached if we work together.

• He doesn't have much of a reputation, or so I've heard.

• I have my doubts about disbelief.

• As a rule of thumb, one should never generalize.

MONTHLY GRIPE

Why don’t we encourage people to use there brains and reward them for doing so?

Who are our leaders? What values do we reward and thereby encourage the most, Sporting prowess and beauty over honesty, integrity, intelligence or good work ethics. Tana Umanga is rumoured to have been paid 3 million dollars over 3 years to encourage children and parents to teach and learn more from home. A great aim which I wholeheartedly applaud. What I question is their choice of learned hero. Admittedly I do not know much about this man except he kicks a leather ball about a paddock for a living but he is not somebody that I am aware of as having much intelligence. So what message is he really sending our children – Don’t worry about learning because if you are good enough at sports you will make much more than you ever could as a scientist?

Schools end of year assembles tend to give much bigger and better awards to children who play sport, music, cook or sew than they do to children who do well academically. Indeed children who do well academically are looked down upon by many of their peers. So when we as a society, value most: money good looks and sporting prowess, where will this lead us?

DID YOU KNOW

Goldfish can become voracious vegetarians if encouraged enough with delectable greenery!

My goldfish eat only fish food and algae and bugs, so cohabit happily with my water lilies, however my mothers’ goldfish just love eating anything green. My mother has feed them handfuls of duck weed as a treat for many years. Unfortunately she is now trying to grow water lilies in her pond with them. To our surprise the goldfish consider the lilies great food and decimate them very quickly. She has tried growing a number of fast growing green weeds in their pond to allow the lilies a chance to grow but her goldfish eat them up too quickly for them to establish. I have never met goldfish that love their vegetables so much.

PROBLEMS – SOLUTIONS

Unhappy relationships – Giving praise

Praising others is not the only way to built great relationships but it is a great start. Whether it is your partner, your children, your boss or your parent, everybody responds well to praise, acknowledgement and encouragement. By pointing out the things they do right that you like you are encouraging more of that behaviour. Conversely pointing out their faults and what they have done wrong will tend to make them unhappy, not keen to help out. Strangely enough psychiatrists believe that mentioning the behaviour you don’t like can in fact encourage people to do that behaviour more!

People who encourage others, make others feel good about themselves, happy and encouraged to do more to help. While those people who do not acknowledge it when people do things well and right but tear them to strips when they make mistakes leave people feeling hurt, angry, frustrated, disillusioned, depressed, not wanting to be helpful again and certainly not caring whether the person who has admonished them so harshly succeeds or not.

Successful people are people who have mastered the art of building up others. This is especially true of our families.

One of the ways we build up our families is to praise them. There is power in praising people! Something begins to happen in them, in you, and in your relationship when you praise someone. Can you remember a time when someone told you something about you in a praising manner? It was great, wasn't it? You probably liked that person more after they praised you, didn't you?

I am not talking about praising people for the sake of praising people. I am talking about honestly looking for and praising positive character traits and actions of your spouse and children. Don't lie to them. If they have done something wrong, correct it, but when they do something right, praise it!

Benefits of praising: Your relationship grows. Life is about relationships--family relationships, friends and co-workers. When we begin to praise people for their positive aspects, our relationships grow. It puts them, and us, on the fast track. Your leadership and influence grows. Who is going to have greater relationships, the one who tears down or the one who builds up?

Stronger relationships and loyalty. When the person is appreciated and praised, they become fiercely loyal, because they know that you care for them, love them and appreciate them.

I truly believe it is our job to build the members of our family up and that they need it. There will always be others who come along to tear them down; it is our job to instil in them the power of praise!

Make it your goal to praise every member of your family at least once each day. If you can, praise them a few times a day.

Any way you cut it, there is power in praising people. If you are serious about healthy family relationships, this is a great place to start!

Q. When was the last time you had fun - real fun - with each member of your family? What kinds of fun things do you like to do with your spouse? What kinds of fun things do you like to do with your kids? More importantly, what fun things do they like to do with you?

Hi Diana, I tried out “Freecall” It seems too good to be true. Yes you do get free calls but the voice quality is a little poor – echoes and bad delay sometimes, but I can live with this when it’s free! Thanks for the tip! -B.

CRAFT

With Christmas just over I found this amusing “gift” for those people who always say they want nothing for their birthday, Christmas, anniversary, etc. Get a clean empty jar with a lid. Scrap of any leftover label. Then print the following words onto a label, cut it out neatly and glue it to the jar (remember to use milk to do this) as in HomeMaking Monthly 25.

PRINT THE FOLLOWING:
“When you were asked what you wanted for Birthday / Anniversary / Graduation / Christmas / etc. (only put in what is applicable here) Do you remember saying NOTHING? Well this time someone heard you, searched high and low and found this perfect gift for you. A Jar of Nothing Just For You!”

I would recommend having a real back up present and presenting this once they have got over the surprise of this amusing present.

NATURAL HEALTH

Onions (Allium Cepa)

Having read the book ‘Holes’ and seen the movie my daughter asked me “Are onions really that good for you” I did not know so I went searching on the internet and here is some of what I found:
Healers through the ages have had great respect for the curative powers of the onion and recent studies have validated these old beliefs.

Onions contain more than one hundred sulphur-containing compounds. These sulphur compounds are what cause the eyes to tear up when cutting onions. One particular sulphur compound has been found to prevent the biochemical chain of events that lead to asthma and respiratory ailments.

Onions are rich in flavornoids which have been shown to deactivate several potent carcinogens and tumour promoters as well as interfere with the growth of oestrogen-sensitive cells involved in breast cancer.

In India, communities that never consumed onions or garlic had blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels substantially higher, and blood clotting times shorter than those who regularly ate onions and or garlic.

Chinese with the highest intake of onions, garlic, and other Allium vegetables have a risk of stomach cancer 40 percent less than those with the lowest intake. Elderly Dutch men and women with the highest onion consumption (at least one-half onion/day) had one-half the level of stomach cancer compared with those who ate no onions at all.

An onion a day can raise HDL's (good cholesterol), resulting in lower blood pressure and prevention of blood clots.

Different charts show different constituents but most agree that Onions are low in calories and high in Vitamin B6, Vitamin B1, and folic acid.

Onions belong to the same family as garlic, leeks, chives, scallions and shallots. There are over 600 species of Allium, distributed all over the world.

Onions have been used as an ingredient in various dishes for thousands of years by many cultures around the world. World onion production is steadily increasing so that onion is now the second most important horticultural crop after tomatoes.

Early American settlers used wild onions to treat colds, coughs, and asthma and to repel insects. Chinese medicine uses onions to treat angina, coughs, bacterial infections, and breathing problems.

The World Health Organization (WHO) supports the use of onions for the treatment of poor appetite and to prevent atherosclerosis. Onion extracts are recognized by WHO for providing relief in the treatment of coughs and colds, asthma and bronchitis. Onions are known to decrease bronchial spasms.

Onions are safely consumed by most people however, consuming large quantities of onions can lead to stomach distress and gastrointestinal irritation that may result in nausea and diarrhoea. There are no known interactions with drugs except that they can weaken the action of coagulants.
