A Parting Word

Hi HomeMakers,

Never take good health for granted. 6 weeks ago my youngest child injured herself rather badly and although she is much better now she still needs to take things slowly and is not able to do a lot. You would be amazed at just how badly you can injure yourself from even a small fall! I would like to encourage you all to have a very healthy respect for even the smallest of heights I certainly have developed a much healthier respect for them now.

Sorry about the absence of last months newsletter and the delay in this newsletter. The good news is that I finally think I have cured all the objectionable spam I have been getting on my forum. You do need to log on though but I am hoping you can get to use it and enjoy it now without coming across anything unpleasant! I also aim to change the date of publishing to the first week of each month, Starting January 2008.

Christmas is almost upon us again and it is time for my yearly reminder that the best way to have everybody enjoy Christmas is to SHARE THE WORK. Yet again I will emphasis that if you overdo things in an effort to ensure everybody is having a good time and become tired and grumpy then your mood will spill over and effect everybody and why should you do everything for everybody it is Xmas for you too! Sharing jobs with others can change them from being jobs to becoming enjoyable activities!

PEARLS OF WISDOM

- They just make the best of everything.

THE MONTHLY GIGGLE

Reporters interviewing a 104-year-old woman: "And what do you think is the best thing about being 104?" the reporter asked. She simply replied, "No peer pressure."

The nice thing about being senile is you can hide your own Easter eggs.

My memory's not as sharp as it used to be. Also, my memory's not as sharp as it used to be.

Know how to prevent sagging? Just eat till the wrinkles fill out.

Remember: You don't stop laughing because you grow old. You grow old because you stop laughing.

THE SENILITY PRAYER : Grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones I do, and the eyesight to tell the difference.

The questions below were posted on an Australian Tourism Website and the answers are the actual responses by the website officials, who obviously have a sense of humour.
I have never seen it rain on TV, how do the plants grow?
A: We import all plants fully grown and then just sit around watching them die.

Q: Can you give me some information about hippo racing in Australia?
A: A-fri-ca is the big triangle shaped continent south of Europe.
Aus-tra-lia is that big island in the middle of the Pacific which does not...
... oh forget it. Sure, the hippo racing is every Tuesday night in Kings Cross. Come naked.

Q: I have a question about a famous animal in Australia, but I forget its name. It's a kind of bear and lives in trees.
A: It's called a Drop Bear. They are so called because they drop out of Gum trees and eat the brains of anyone walking underneath them. You can scare them off by spraying yourself with human urine before you go out walking.

MONTHLY GRIPE

I am feed up with people who complain about everything. The sort of people who see a half full glass as “half empty”. Sure it is important to complain about some things so that improvements can be made for others but no body or organisation is perfect and finding faults in everything is more destructive than it is helpful! A little bit of constructive criticism dished out with a bit of praise for things done well can work as a good way of encouraging and empowering people to better themselves while a constant barrage of criticism will only serve to create misery resentment and make people feel that they are worthless and it is just not worth bothering about.

DID YOU KNOW

Some cats love toothbrushes. One of my daughters was having a bath, with her cat in the room with her. She was horrified to watch the cat casually wander up and chew on her toothbrush in a manner that suggested that this was common practice for her. She got new toothbrushes which she now carefully stores in a cupboard and has attached the old one to her cats scratching post where her cat makes frequent use of it.

PROBLEMS – SOLUTIONS

Outbreaks of disease in animals are usually controlled by mass slaughter. Giving little practical experience for scientist to draw upon should a deadly outbreak of disease befall a human population. I wonder if we would be better off if they looked at these outbreaks as an opportunity to learn how to control deadly outbreaks of disease should a similar style outbreak befall a human population. Imagine the public outcry if it was decided to control an outbreak of deadly disease in a human population with mass slaughter.

CRAFT

Chocolate Brandy Truffles

These are my husband’s favourite Christmas treat.

250g of chocolate (my husband prefers the dark chocolate, the children prefer less dark).
300ml cream.
¼ to ½ cup of brandy ( you can have less or more but more will make your mixture more runny.) You may prefer a different spirit. Or remove the spirit altogether. You can add a teaspoon of essence instead if you like.
200g cream cheese (optional) The cream cheese helps with the consistency and allows you to add more brandy. It adds an extra dimension to the flavour and is really useful if you wish to use this mix to ice a chocolate mud cake.
½ to 1 cup sugar depending on your taste.
1 teaspoon of vanilla.

Method:

Add sugar and vanilla to cream and beat until thick.

Melt chocolate in microwave and stir in brandy, then add to cream and mix well. You need to be quick with your mixing. Cooling the chocolate before you add anything to it will help give you a better end consistency as long as it is still runny when you add the brandy. Brandy needs to be added to the chocolate before adding to the cream as the brandy can curdle the cream and it does alter the consistency of your chocolate and start setting the chocolate so it is important to be quick.

If you wish to include cream cheese you soften it then add it to the brandy with ½ a cup (about) of sugar and beat well before adding the chocolate.

Once you have made your brandy truffle mixture you can:

Roll them in a ball then roll them in a 50/50 mix of sifted icing sugar and cocoa powder.

You can place them in paper truffle holders. Then sprinkle them with a 50/50 mix of sifted icing sugar and cocoa powder. You can sprinkle the base of the truffle holder with this mix before placing your mix in if you wish.

Pre make little chocolate bases / cups and fill them with this mix then sprinkle with the cocoa icing sugar mix when done.

I find these keep best in the freezer where others can’t find them. They will last approx 3 months there if undiscovered! Or you can store them in the fridge for approx 3 weeks.

NATURAL HEALTH

As it is Christmas and there is an abundance of strawberries in season here in New Zealand, I thought I would look at the health benefits of strawberries, so you can feel good about stuffing yourself with these delicious fruit this festive season.

There are over 600 different types of strawberries and they are said to be the most popular berry in the world. Although they have been being eaten for thousands of years the plump juicy strawberry we all know and love wasn’t developed until the 18th century and then only as a result of crosspollination.

At one stage they were prized more for their medicinal properties than their delectable flavours.

Strawberries are filled with unusual phytonutrients that love to promote your health.

They are believed to be:

bulletA heart-protective fruit.
bulletProtection against Macular Degeneration (good for your eyes).
bulletProtection against Rheumatoid Arthritis as they are an anti-inflammatory fruit.

“The anti-inflammatory properties of strawberry include the ability of phenols in this fruit to lessen activity of the enzyme cyclo-oxygenase, or COX. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin or ibuprofen block pain by blocking this enzyme, whose over activity has been shown to contribute to unwanted inflammation, such as that which is involved in rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, asthma, atherosclerosis, and cancer. Unlike drugs that are COX-inhibitors, however, strawberries do not cause intestinal bleeding.”

Strawberries are an excellent source of vitamin C and manganese. They are a good source of dietary fibre, iodine, potassium, folate, riboflavin, vitamin B5, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B6, vitamin K, magnesium, and copper.

A PARTING THOUGHT

It intrigues me the measures the New Zealand Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries are going to, to prevent the spread of the invasive algae Didiymo in our rivers. Anybody swimming there or boating must clean themselves and their equipment with a special sterilising solution. I wonder how many ducks and other water fowl do the same?

Until next month, take care, count your blessings and enjoy life,

               Kindest regards,

                                           Diana.
